Mike has “gone into the front room” to “read” and “drink tea.”
To translate, this means that he has gone into the front room to listen to Christmas music. He thinks that because I am in the back of the house and the dryer is running that I cannot hear him.
I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, MIKE! AND I STRONGLY DISAPPROVE!
(Though the Pierce Pettis version of “It Came to Pass” just came on. I do like that. BUT I WILL NOT BE SWAYED! IT’S TOO EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS!)
If I have to follow his arbitrary No Soup Until October 1 rule, he should have to follow my arbitrary No Christmas Music Until The Day After Thanksgiving rule. It only seems fair. Who is with me?

[...] If I have a musical failing that my friends would rip me for, it’s “Not owning enough Sixpence.” So when I saw they had a Christmas album, I grabbed it … and have held it until now. Since August. See, Mike, holding out? IT’S JUST NOT THAT HARD. [...]

I AGREE!
(Jeff always goes through a Christmas music phase in the middle of freakin’ summer. WTF?)
:gasp: I only read the first part of this before I said, “IF KARI HAS TO FOLLOW THE NO SOUP RULE MIKE HAS TO FOLLOW THE NO CHRISTMAS MUSIC RULE!!!”
And then I read the rest.
So clearly you see where I stand…. MIKE.
P.S. – and your rule isn’t ARBITRARY, it is based on the CHURCH CALENDAR. Unlike Mike’s soup rule, which IS aribitary. There are cold days in September that justify soup! There are!
P.P.S – See? GOD SAYS SO, MIKE. NO CHRISTMAS MUSIC UNTIL THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING!!
(my opinion on this may be slightly magnified by the entire hospital getting covered in Christmas decorations the day after Halloween. I expect it now, and it STILL MAKES ME ANGRY.)
As someone who has also started listening to Christmas music, I can almost side with Mike (I’ve already started Messiah rehearsals, and my mom and I are going to a Christmas craft show this weekend, so I stopped fighting the urge and gave in – hehe). But I do agree, if you have to abide by the arbitrary soup rule, he should have to abide by the music rule. (Maybe this will get him to relax the soup rule! win, win, win!)
yes, I agree. it is waaaay too early for christmas music.
I’m with Kari. It’s just rude to Thanksgiving.
I alwasy refuse to listen to Christmas music until Thanksgiving Day, something about it playing keeps me sane during cooking that day. But this year…all the Halloween decorations in the area made me long for Christmas music…I broke it out in early October!
To sum up these comments, Mike apparently hates both Jesus and Thanksgiving. WAY TO GO, MIKE.
If Mike is going to use my birthday to justify soup consumption, perhaps I, as a 1 Oct baby, can tell him that he’s full of crap?
That said, I’m not going to return the favor to Mike by arguing that Kari’s Christmas music rule is wrong, because it’s right.
I’m fighting my hardest to hold off until Thanksgiving. It’s taking sheer willpower.
(Yes, I usually crack once during the summer and break out the Christmas music, but now that we’re almost up against it, I gotta stay strong.)
Don’t ruin Christmas for everyone, Mike!
Here’s my thought –
Soup – good. Christmas music – AWESOME. Both good things. Too good to only be enjoyed under limitations.
FREE THE MUSIC/Power to the people/etc.
(I will admit that I have to listen to Christmas music early b/c of my job. And I’m married to a choir director. But I would probably listen early anyways.)
I might be to blame for Mike doing this. I need suggestions! I know Mike loves Christmas music and has much wisdom!
Mike is wrong.
So, I stumbled upon you from Emily at Chatting with the Sky and have commented a time or two. I love your blog and as I was reading, I kept thinking “He can listen to Christmas music now, but she can’t have soup in September! What gives”
I’m sorry if I have offended everyone.
I believe that Kari has failed to mention that the so-called soup rule has been amended and that soup is allowed whenever the need arises, such as the snow day in August. The new arbitrary rule is that we cannot have soup as a meal until October 1.
I have caved a little into the cries of unfairness. Now let me go listen to my Christmas music to help me prepare my heart for Advent.
I appreciate all of your support. You guys are awesome.
Don’t let Mike fool you – he played that “prepare my heart for Advent” line last week. I reminded him that one does not prepare for Advent, that Advent itself is preparation enough.
(Can’t wait for it to snow in August! Yay!)
Mike, we hate the sin, not the sinner!
I completely agree with you, Kari. Christmas music is for AFTER Thanksgiving. (Apparently, Thanksgiving is becoming a forgotten holiday…)
I think Mike should listen to Thanksgiving music.
i just figured after the thousands of comments, i would also like to say Mike is wrong.
c’mon Mike! there’s too much fall music to be had for Christmas music now!
I’m with Mike.
so i know i’m late and can’t really enjoy all the bickering now…but i still do. and i think we need to make sure we enjoy ALL of the holidays, and not skip over Thanksgiving – you know the one where we’re supposed to be THANKFUL??!!
let’s not just move from halloween to christmas – i mean, where’s the gratitude, michael??!!
I guess I imposed the same feelings on my children – can’t tell if it’s a treasured tradition or a burden! https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=23566989&postID=774214654393380480
