I have felt that last paragraph very acutely, and it has been beautiful. Kate is fascinated with the fact that no one with dark skin (her term) has ever been president. She hasn't figured out the woman thing yet.

We live within a mile or two of many civil rights landmarks, and as she continues to grow, and is taught about what happened here, I wonder how strange and foreign it will seem to her. One of the neat things about the civil rights era is that so much of it was televised, and we have that footage and other resources to help those of us who didn't live through it, to see it, at least the way it was experienced by middle America. We are able to watch and can experience a bit of the outrage that led to the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Act and the end to segregation.
