Hi Kari,

I came here from chatting at the sky...I've read a few of your posts and I've really enjoyed them, so I'm bookmarking you! I had to leave a comment on this post, though, because Jane Eyre is my favorite book of all time...it's so much my favorite that I made a pilgrimage to Haworth, England, to see where the Brontes lived (and wrote!). I've also seen all the movie adaptations, and I'm wondering which is your favorite (I'm assuming you've seen some of them?). Anyway, it's nice to encounter a kindred spirit. Come visit me online if you're bored!

Hm. Well, if one day you SHOULD feel compelled, you should know that the Pearl is probably my least favorite he's written, but I LOVE The Winter of Our Discontent and East of Eden :).

Jeff: It's too overwrought for me. I can't take the drama.

Susan Coleman: I saw something about the BBC when I Googled it, but it didn't seem like quite the same list. I was probably looking at the wrong thing. Thanks for the clarification!

Susan: I don't dislike Steinbeck. We did The Pearl in school and I enjoyed it, but somehow I missed the other big ones, and I don't feel compelled to rectify that situation any time soon.

Do you have something against Steinbeck? I think I remember that you don't like Hemingway, so I can sort of see you not liking Steinbeck either (I love them both, though :)).

Great blog. You've probably discovered by now that this is not the National Endowment for the Arts' Big Read but rather one from the U.K. and compiled by the BBC. In the NEA's Big Read (neabigread.org), the NEA provides grants to communities for "one book, one community" programs. The communities choose from a few dozen (not 100) books and then provide free resources for local book group and classroom discussions. Just thought NEA and the Big Read communities should get their just due.
